Nโ€™Golo Kante set for exit as West Ham make contact to sign former Chelsea midfielder

West Ham United are said to be targeting a move for former Chelsea and Leicester City midfielder Nโ€™Golo Kantรฉ during the January transfer window.

West Ham face competition for Kantรฉ
According to Give Me Sport journalist Ben Jacobs, West Ham have made an enquiry for the Champions League-winning midfielder within the last 48 hours. However, they are not alone in their interest.
The Hammers have already added two new faces this month but remain eager to strengthen further before the deadline. Despite mounting pressure on manager Nuno Espรญrito Santo, the clubโ€™s hierarchy appear willing to support him in the market, even with West Ham currently sitting seven points away from safety.

Turkish heavyweights Fenerbahรงe are understood to be leading the race for the 65-cap France international. The Istanbul-based club are confident they have reached personal terms with the 2018 World Cup winner, though negotiations with Al-Ittihad over a transfer fee are still ongoing.
Kantรฉโ€™s contract with the Saudi Pro League side expires at the end of the season, leaving uncertainty over the amount required to secure his services in January.
Jacobs explained:
โ€œKantรฉ wants the move. Fenerbahรงe are the frontrunners, even though Iโ€™m told West Ham also made another enquiry in the last 48 hours. Fenerbahรงe are leading the race.

โ€œTheyโ€™re confident they have the playerโ€™s approval, but there is still work to do with Al-Ittihad.โ€
Would Kantรฉ consider a Premier League return?
Now 34, Kantรฉ has enjoyed a glittering career that includes winning the World Cup, Champions League and Premier League. With nothing left to prove, his priorities at this stage may be centred on longevity rather than intensity.
A return to the Premier League could be demanding, particularly given the pace and physicality of the competition, which may no longer suit him at this point in his career. By contrast, a move to Turkey could allow Kantรฉ to remain influential, compete for trophies and finish his career on a high note.

Given those factors, a relegation battle with West Ham appears far less appealing than the opportunity to challenge for silverware elsewhere, making Fenerbahรงe a more attractive destination.
