The Toffees made a lightning-fast start and stunned the home crowd just 11 seconds into the contest. Jordan Pickford’s long ball released Thierno Barry, who chested the ball into the path of Merlin Rohl. The midfielder struck a powerful effort that crashed against the post, setting the tone for Everton’s fearless display.
Everton thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Jake O’Brien powered home a header from James Garner’s excellent delivery. A solid and encouraging performance from Patterson, who dealt well with Emiliano Buendia and Ian Maatsen. He made a vital clearance across goal and supported the attack when possible.
James Tarkowski – 8
Tarkowski was defensively assured, making a crucial interception to stop Buendia. While a few passes went astray early on, he grew into the game and delivered a commanding second-half display.
Jake O’Brien – 8
Unlucky to see his first-half header ruled out, O’Brien was excellent at both ends of the pitch. He also produced a crucial block to deny Morgan Rogers from close range.
Vitalii Mykolenko – 6
Mykolenko did well to disrupt Evann Guessand early on but was fortunate later when he lost an aerial duel and saw Guessand’s header hit the crossbar. He also tested Martinez with a driven effort from Rohl’s pass.
James Garner – 8.5
Another superb showing from Garner, who dictated the tempo in midfield. He was always available, won the most tackles and duels on the pitch, and delivered the outstanding cross for O’Brien’s disallowed goal.
Merlin Rohl – 7.5
Rohl came agonisingly close to scoring inside the opening seconds and produced his most impressive performance in an Everton shirt so far. Despite a few turnovers, he kept the midfield ticking effectively.
Harrison Armstrong – 7
Armstrong continued to impress following his return from loan at Preston. Calm and intelligent in possession, he was unfortunate to be penalised for offside in the build-up to O’Brien’s ruled-out header.
Dwight McNeil – 7
McNeil’s quick reaction to Torres’ mistake led directly to Everton’s winning goal. He also worked tirelessly without the ball and contributed defensively.
Thierno Barry – 8 (subbed off 83’)
Barry’s composed chipped finish sealed the victory. He caused problems throughout, held the ball up well, won physical battles, and linked play effectively in another encouraging display.
Jack Grealish – 7
Grealish remained composed despite a hostile reception, drawing fouls to disrupt Villa’s momentum and creating moments of danger, including a volley at the back post from a corner.
