The Ibrox side, along with Sheffield United and several other clubs, have been informed that a potential midfield target may be available at a reduced price amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Sunderland.
Since the arrival of head coach Danny Rohl, the Light Blues have surged back into contention for the Premiership title and have already completed three signings this month. Midfielder Tochi Chukwaeni has arrived alongside left-back Tuur Rommens and winger Andreas Skov Olsen to bolster the squad for the second half of the campaign.
Sunderland captain Dan Neil has emerged as a reported midfield option for Rangers, particularly following Connor Barron’s injury. However, competition for his signature is strong, with Sheffield United and West Ham also believed to be monitoring the situation.
Neil played a key role in Sunderland’s play-off final success last season, captaining the side to promotion back to the Premier League. Despite this, recent additions — including the arrival of Granit Xhaka — have limited his opportunities, and with his contract set to expire in the summer, his long-term future remains unclear.
According to the Daily Mirror, Sunderland may be willing to negotiate a cut-price deal for the 24-year-old during this window.

The report states: “At just 24 years old, Neil remains a player with significant potential. As captain, he was instrumental in Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship. Although he was valued at around £15 million last summer, Rangers could now land him for a considerably lower fee with his contract due to run out in June.”
Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris addressed Neil’s situation last week, saying: “From a football perspective, Dan is still an important member of the squad. With only six months left on his contract, decisions are approaching quickly, but I appreciate the way he has continued to work.
“The level of competition is extremely high, and we now have many quality players. He has accepted that challenge and never given up, which is crucial. We’ll see whether he stays or moves on.
“It’s a delicate situation because we want to respect everyone involved. He remains important within the group, but his motivation is tied to both the present and the future. The transfer market is unpredictable, so it’s difficult to say what will happen.”
Meanwhile, new signing Andreas Skov Olsen has spoken of his excitement at joining Rangers and his ambition to make an impact at the club.
