Aston Villa eye double deal for Sunderland-linked pair amid major injury blow

Sunderland have recently been credited with interest in both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham, but Aston Villa now appear to be emerging as serious contenders for the pair.

According to reports, Villa are weighing up a move for AC Milan midfielder Loftus-Cheek after suffering a significant injury setback. TEAMtalk revealed last week that several Premier League sides — including Sunderland, Villa, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Brentford, Everton and Fulham — have been made aware that the England international could be available during the current transfer window. The 26-year-old, who is contracted to Milan, is believed to carry a price tag in the region of £10 million.

The Telegraph have since expanded on that report, suggesting Villa could accelerate their interest following a damaging blow to Boubacar Kamara. The midfielder was forced off during Villa’s FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, and Unai Emery later admitted there were concerns over the seriousness of the injury.

Speaking ahead of last weekend’s Premier League defeat to Everton, Emery said: “Kamara is out, it is his knee. We are checking him and he is visiting some doctors and we are going to know about him in a few days. Of course he’s not available and maybe for a long time.”

Subsequent scans have confirmed fears that the problem is more severe than initially anticipated, with Kamara now facing the possibility of missing the rest of the season. Should that prove to be the case, it would mark another major fitness setback for the Frenchman, who already spent much of 2024 sidelined after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

With Kamara regarded as a crucial figure in Emery’s system — leading the squad in several defensive statistics — Villa are understood to be exploring options to strengthen their midfield. Sitting third in the Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal, the club are keen to reinforce as they pursue their ambitions for the remainder of the campaign, and Loftus-Cheek has emerged as a potential solution.

Villa step up Tammy Abraham pursuit

Villa are also strongly linked with a move for Roma striker Tammy Abraham. The 28-year-old is currently on loan at Besiktas and, like Loftus-Cheek, has been mentioned as a target for both Villa and Sunderland in recent days. However, momentum now appears to be building in Villa’s favour.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested talks are progressing quickly, with personal terms already agreed. He said: “Aston Villa are advancing in talks with Besiktas to get Tammy Abraham deal done. Agreement sealed with the player as Tammy opened doors to AVFC move. Club-to-club talks moving fast, not done yet but well underway.”

Abraham, who previously spent time at Villa earlier in his career, could be set for a return to the Midlands as Emery looks to bolster his attacking options.
