The 24-year-old has struggled for regular minutes this season, finding it difficult to break into Régis Le Bris’ preferred starting XI. Competition in midfield has been fierce, with club captain Granit Xhaka, the impressive Noah Sadiki and the dependable Habib Diarra all ahead of him in the pecking order, limiting Neil’s opportunities.
Neil’s only full 90-minute appearance this campaign came in the Carabao Cup clash against Huddersfield Town, a match in which he was also trusted with the captain’s armband.
Despite his reduced role this season, Neil’s importance to Sunderland’s promotion push last year should not be overlooked. He was a key figure during their successful Championship playoff campaign, making 44 league appearances while contributing two goals and three assists. There remains confidence that he still possesses the qualities that made him so influential at that level.
As a result, several clubs are believed to be monitoring his situation, with West Ham now emerging as the leading contenders to secure his signature during the winter window.
O’Rourke claims the Hammers have already stepped up their pursuit, with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side currently ‘leading the race’ to bring the central midfielder to the London Stadium.
Neil to West Ham
The former England U20 international was notably absent from Sunderland’s squad for Saturday’s defeat to West Ham, a decision that has fuelled speculation that a move away from the Stadium of Light could be imminent.
During the previous Championship season, Neil won 208 duels and registered 46 interceptions—figures that placed him among the top 9% of midfielders for duels won and the top 7% for interceptions across the league. Those defensive qualities could be valuable for West Ham as they look to strengthen their fight for survival.
With Tomas Soucek expected to move on, a midfield pairing of Neil alongside another strong ball-winner such as Matheus Fernandes could give Nuno a compact and combative unit, particularly against possession-dominant opponents.
Given Neil’s lack of involvement and the fact his contract expires in the summer, West Ham may be able to secure his services for a modest fee, potentially just above his £5 million Transfermarkt valuation, with Sunderland unlikely to hold out for a significant sum.
