The Black Cats had shown interest in Omlin during the winter transfer window, with Sky Deutschland reporting earlier this week that Sunderland had made contact over a potential move. Subsequent reports in Germany suggested the 32-year-old was close to leaving Gladbach in January, and Sunderland were viewed as a possible destination, with the Bundesliga side keen to offload the experienced goalkeeper.
Swiss outlet Blick later confirmed Sunderland had entered negotiations with Borussia Mönchengladbach but added that the two clubs were struggling to reach an agreement. Those talks have now collapsed, according to a fresh update from Sky Deutschland, ruling out a move to Wearside.
Instead, Omlin is set to join Bayer Leverkusen. The reigning Bundesliga champions are in the market for a goalkeeper after their first-choice option, Mark Flekken, suffered an injury earlier this month that is expected to sideline him for a prolonged period.
Earlier reports had linked Leverkusen with several Premier League-based goalkeepers, including Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega and James Trafford, as well as Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen. However, those options are no longer being pursued, with Omlin emerging as their preferred choice.
Sky Deutschland report that Bayer Leverkusen have reached a full agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach to sign Omlin on loan until the end of the season, with his medical scheduled for Monday.
The Swiss international has yet to feature for Gladbach this campaign, but a temporary move to Leverkusen could offer him the chance of regular first-team football straight away.
