However, the second half told a very different story. Everton emerged with renewed intensity and energy, pinning Leeds back and dictating the tempo of the game. Their pressure eventually paid off when in-form forward Thierno Barry struck the equaliser, continuing his impressive run of form with a fourth goal in five league matches.
The draw had implications at both ends of the table, nudging Leeds United one point clear of Nottingham Forest, while also leaving the Whites six points ahead of West Ham United in the final relegation place.
Speaking after the match, Garner revealed how Moyes’ half-time intervention proved decisive in changing the flow of the contest.
“The first half we were sloppy,” the Everton midfielder admitted. “We just weren’t at the races, so we knew something had to change after the break.
“The manager acted straight away. He made two substitutions and you could see the difference immediately. We were the better team in the second half and probably should have gone on to win the game.
“He wanted us to play with more tempo and intensity. We were losing too many second balls in midfield, so we adjusted the formation to give us more control. Overall, he demanded a much better performance — and I think we delivered that in the second half.”
Garner’s comments underlined the impact of Moyes’ tactical tweaks and rallying words, as Everton showed resilience and adaptability to rescue a point after a disappointing start.
