It was a disastrous opening half for the hosts. West Ham took the lead in fortuitous fashion when Jarrod Bowen’s attempted cross evaded a diving Robert Sánchez and found its way into the net. The visitors doubled their advantage before the break as Crysencio Summerville rifled home, leaving Chelsea second-best across the pitch.
A triple substitution at half-time proved decisive for Chelsea, with Liam Rosenior’s changes transforming the contest. Just 12 minutes after the restart, Wesley Fofana delivered a superb cross that João Pedro nodded in to pull one back. Soon after, Marc Cucurella equalised, bundling the ball home after West Ham failed to properly clear another dangerous delivery.
Both sides pushed for a winner late on, but Chelsea struck the decisive blow. Enzo Fernández arrived in the box to smash home from close range following a cutback, sparking wild celebrations inside the stadium. However, the drama was far from over.
As stoppage time ticked away, tensions boiled over near the corner flag when Adama Traoré and Cucurella battled for possession. Traoré lost his composure and threw the Chelsea defender to the ground, prompting João Pedro to shove him away. That incident quickly escalated into a full-scale melee, with players from both teams rushing in.
During the chaos, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo confronted João Pedro and, in a moment of madness, grabbed the striker by the throat. Officials were forced to intervene as VAR reviewed the incident.
Following an on-field review, referee Anthony Taylor showed Todibo a straight red card for violent conduct. The Premier League’s Match Centre later confirmed the decision, stating that VAR advised a review after Todibo was seen grabbing Chelsea’s number 20 around the neck in a violent manner.
Despite securing all three points, Chelsea fans were left unconvinced by their team’s overall performance, particularly after a poor first half that saw players booed off at the interval. Alejandro Garnacho was among those who bore the brunt of supporter frustration.
