According to reports, the Black Cats’ decision to bring in Ellborg was driven by the expectation that Roefs could attract major bids at the end of the season. The Dutch shot-stopper has been one of Sunderland’s standout performers since arriving at the Stadium of Light last year, establishing himself as Régis Le Bris’ first-choice goalkeeper. His consistent displays, strong shot-stopping, command of the box, and calm presence have earned widespread acclaim.
Sunderland moved to strengthen their goalkeeping department last week by completing a £3 million deal for Ellborg from Swedish side Malmö. The 22-year-old’s arrival subsequently allowed promotion hero Anthony Patterson to depart on loan to Championship club Millwall, where he has reunited with former Sunderland manager Alex Neil.
However, Football Insider reports that Ellborg’s signing is not solely about depth and competition. The outlet claims Sunderland are already preparing for the possibility of a “£50 million-plus” bid for Roefs this summer, amid what is described as “extensive interest” from elite clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the Sunderland goalkeeper. A recent update from talkSPORT suggests Spurs are monitoring Roefs as they assess their long-term goalkeeping options. With first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario attracting interest from Inter Milan, Thomas Frank’s side are believed to have identified Roefs as a potential successor should Vicario depart.
Following his move to Wearside, Ellborg spoke of his excitement at joining the club. “It feels amazing to have signed for this club,” he said. “The last few days have been really enjoyable, from learning about the interest to getting to know the people here and completing the move.
