Four Starts, One Stark Message: Is Time Running Out for Tyler Dibling at Everton?

David Moyes has delivered a blunt challenge to Tyler Dibling as the teenager continues to struggle for impact at Everton.

Dibling’s move to Merseyside in the summer was meant to mark an exciting new chapter, but the 19-year-old has found opportunities limited under the experienced Everton boss. Game time has been scarce, and he has yet to establish himself in the side.

Despite words of encouragement from James Garner, Dibling has been unable to seize his moment. He has started just four Premier League matches since arriving, and with Saturday’s clash against Fulham marking Everton’s 25th league game of the season, the message from Moyes appears unmistakable.

The Everton manager was unimpressed with Dibling’s performances during his recent run in the team, which came while Iliman Ndiaye was away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Since Ndiaye’s return, Dibling has slipped back to the bench.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Moyes did not hold back when discussing the winger’s situation.

He suggested that, in Dibling’s position, he would feel the need to “pull his finger out” and demonstrate his true ability to the manager. Moyes stressed that competition at the top level is fierce and must be embraced, although he acknowledged Dibling’s youth as a factor. He described him as a quiet character who may need time to settle but insisted he must make an impression when chances arise.

Moyes added that he has seen small signs of growing edge and frustration in Dibling’s game — something he views positively. However, he made clear what is required: greater directness, the confidence to take on defenders, and the ability to deliver tangible output in the form of assists and goals.

While James Tarkowski has spoken positively about Dibling’s performances in training, Moyes’ comments suggest he expects far more in competitive matches.

If the situation does not improve, speculation over a potential summer exit could intensify. Everton recognise the need for patience with a 19-year-old adapting to a new environment, but there is also an expectation of higher standards, particularly given the scale of his transfer.

Moyes has consistently preferred Dwight McNeil in selection decisions, and that trend may continue following his latest remarks. Although McNeil’s proposed move to Crystal Palace fell through on deadline day, the 26-year-old appears to retain the manager’s trust.

The responsibility now rests firmly on Dibling to respond and prove he can meet the demands placed upon him.
