The Everton boss had been controversially booked during last week’s draw at Brighton after stepping out of his technical area to celebrate Beto’s dramatic 97th-minute equaliser. As a result, Moyes took his seat in the stands at Craven Cottage, alongside club captain Seamus Coleman.
Despite his absence from the dugout, Everton secured all three points — and Moyes couldn’t resist a joke when asked about his elevated vantage point after the match.
Speaking to reporters, the Scotsman quipped that he might have charged onto the pitch when Everton netted the winner had he been on the touchline.
“I’m glad I was up there because I probably would’ve run on the pitch when we scored that second goal,” he admitted with a smile.
When it was pointed out that he had plenty of room to celebrate in the stands, Moyes responded: “The concrete is not good for knee slides, let me tell you.”
Moyes will return to the dugout for Tuesday night’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The victory in London lifts Everton to eighth in the table, just two points behind both Brentford in seventh and Liverpool in sixth, strengthening talk of a potential push for European qualification.
Addressing that prospect, Moyes said: “We’ve put ourselves in a position where we’re asking, ‘Can we have a go at the European places?’
“I knew we had to start winning these types of games because they’re against teams around us.
“We want to be there or thereabouts in March and April. If we can stay in the mix, we’ll give ourselves a real chance.”
Another win over Bournemouth could propel Everton into the European spots as the season heads into its decisive stretch — raising optimism on Merseyside about what might lie ahead.
