After reverting to a traditional back four, Carrick appears to have revitalised several players who struggled in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. Kobbie Mainoo is a prime example, with the youngster enjoying increased minutes and noticeably stronger performances. Harry Maguire, Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu have also stepped up their displays in recent weeks. With the World Cup on the horizon, Maguire will likely be hoping to impress enough to earn a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
Maguire’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, prompting interest from several Premier League clubs keen to sign him on a free transfer. Chelsea and Everton have both been linked with the 32-year-old. However, the Daily Mail reports that United are now “increasingly likely” to keep him, with talks of a new contract that would at least extend his stay into next season.
The defender, who earns around £180,000 per week, may have to accept reduced wages, but he is said to be open to staying—particularly if he continues to feature regularly. Since Carrick’s appointment, Maguire has re-established himself as a regular starter at centre-back and could provide valuable experience next season, whether Carrick remains in charge or a new manager arrives after the World Cup.
Despite facing heavy criticism throughout his career, Maguire has continued to deliver steady performances for United. With John Stones struggling with injuries, his improved form could boost his chances of an England recall.
Former England striker Gary Lineker recently described Maguire as one of football’s most underrated players. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said he believes Maguire does not receive the credit he deserves, acknowledging that while he can be exposed by pace, his intelligence and positioning help compensate for that weakness.
So far this season, Maguire has made 13 Premier League appearances, scoring once — a goal that came against Liverpool during one of Amorim’s standout moments in charge.
