Prominent football pundits Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have weighed in on Nottingham Forest’s decision to part ways with manager Sean Dyche, expressing doubt over whether it was the right move.

Forest opted to dismiss Dyche following a goalless draw with Wolves on Wednesday, making him the fourth manager to lead the team during the 2025/26 campaign. The decision came shortly after senior players were summoned to owner Evangelos Marinakis’ office after the match.

Reflecting on the situation during The Rest is Football podcast, both pundits indicated they were not surprised by the owner’s choice, even if they questioned its wisdom.

“It’s been a difficult season for Forest so far,” Lineker remarked. “But at this stage, the priority has to be consolidation and survival. If they want to steady things and build toward next season, sticking with Sean Dyche probably gave them the best chance.”

Shearer echoed those sentiments, adding: “I completely agree. But Marinakis operates differently. He runs the club on his own terms, and he’s decided to bring in a fourth manager this season.”

Dyche’s tenure at the City Ground lasted just 114 days, sparking debate about whether the experienced manager will return to the Premier League in the future.

However, some feel the punditry class may be relying on familiar narratives when assessing Dyche’s impact. While much of the discussion has centered on his previous achievements—particularly at Everton—critics argue that his recent results and style of play left much to be desired. At the time of his departure, some Forest supporters shared concerns similar to those once voiced by Everton fans: a lack of attacking ambition and an inability to lift the team higher in the standings.

Owner Marinakis is said to have placed significant weight on player feedback before making the change. Now, new boss Vítor Pereira faces an urgent task: restoring confidence and morale in a squad that sits in a precarious league position.

With a Europa League clash against Fenerbahce looming on Thursday, Pereira has little time to settle in as Forest fights to turn its season around.
